I could tell from the second Jon and Melissa came over that I’d enjoy hanging out with them. They’re musicians who love photography, I’m a photographer who loves music, and we both love downtown Tucson’s funky urban scene - thus, it’s on! Since then, we’ve run into each other out on the town enough to make me wonder how we weren’t hanging out already.
Jon had a great notion for a two part engagement shoot, starting with a classic stage shot with microphone and upright bass on the stage of the mighty Fox theater downtown for their “save the date” cards. We were going to use the Hotel Congress stage, but the Fox was kind enough to give us 15 minutes, and who’s going to turn down a big red curtain backdrop like that? A quick setup was key. I used a big softbox positioned below them to mimic old fashioned theater footlights, a trick I learned from my Jedi master – photographer, lighting master and theater buff Tim Fuller. The crazy shadows are an added bonus huh?
For the casual side of things, we headed across the street to La Placita, home of all the other primary colors. Add a dash of crazy Arizona sunset, and you have the makings of a great shoot.
Enjoy these shots you two – the main gallery should be up in a couple of hours, and I’m really looking forward to your wedding in March!
We had a fun little engagement session with Craig and Lydia in downtown Tucson yesterday – a little warm up for their wedding this Saturday. These e-sessions give me a great chance to see how couples fit together, what their best side is, (and if they can pull off “Blue Steel” or “Magnum” without cracking up). It also gives my clients a chance to see that photography doesn’t have to be painful – in fact, we always have a blast. Craig was a bit camera-suspicious at first, but I think he’s a convert, and Lydia is a natural. Stay tuned for some great pics from their wedding!
This year I decided to combine two of my favorite things – fall leaves and photography – by offering portraits sessions on Mt. Lemmon. I spent a couple full days of fun in the leaves with Chip asked Carol, Myles and Aimee, Jaycie and Jeff, Kim and Elijah, and Ricky and Cara. It was a patricuallrly special session for Chip and Carol because he asked her to marry him in Mt. Lemmon’s Spencer Canyon, so for their engagement session, we headed back up there. I’d hoped to catch the brief but glorious fall color, and we timed it just right!
Here are a few of my favorites – I really can’t get enough of those gorgeous maples with their incredible range of colors. I’ll be headed back up this week to catch the last of them if anyone wants to come! This will definitely have to become an annual event.
